Properties of a chiral honeycomb with a Poisson's ratio -1
A theoretical and experimental investigation is conducted of a two-dimensionally chiral honeycomb. The honeycomb exhibits a Poisson's ratio of -1 for deformations in-plane. This Poisson's ratio is maintained over a significant range of strain, in contrast to the variation with strain seen in known negative Poisson's ratio materials.
متن کاملA Three-dimensional Polymer Scaffolding Material Exhibiting a Zero Poisson's Ratio.
Poisson's ratio describes the degree to which a material contracts (expands) transversally when axially strained. A material with a zero Poisson's ratio does not transversally deform in response to an axial strain (stretching). In tissue engineering applications, scaffolding having a zero Poisson's ratio (ZPR) may be more suitable for emulating the behavior of native tissues and accommodating a...
متن کاملNegative Poisson's Ratio Polymeric and Metallic Foams
Foam materials based on metal and several polymers were transformed so that their cellular architectures became re-entrant, ie. with inwardly protruding cell ribs. Foams with re-entrant structures exhibited negative Poisson's ratios as well as greater resilience than conventional foams. Foams with negative Poisson's ratios were prepared using different techniques and materials and their mechani...
متن کامل* 3 D Soft Metamaterials with Negative Poisson ’ s Ratio A TIO
A IO N When materials are uniaxially compressed, they typically expand in directions orthogonal to the applied load. Here, we exploit buckling to design a new class of three dimensional metamaterials with negative Poisson's ratio that contract in the transverse direction under compressive loading regimes. These proposed metamaterials consist of an array of patterned elastomeric spherical shells...
متن کاملRelations between loss angles in isotropic linear viscoelastic materials
For the description of the mechanical behaviour of linear viscoelastic materials a number of characteristic material properties is in use. So the relaxation functions in shear, J(t), in extension, D(t), and in compression, B(t), describe the response of the material to a stepfunction H(t) in the corresponding stress. It can be shown theoretically that the relaxation functions are monotonically ...
